Mukono Municipality has received two modern Type B ambulances to strengthen emergency and post-crash care services. The move follows a government review that identified Mukono as a strategic location along the busy highway to eastern Uganda and one of the rapidly growing urban divisions under the new city structure.

The ambulances, donated by UNICEF through the Global Road Safety Project, will serve Mukono South and Mukono North. Each is fully equipped and manned by trained emergency medical personnel.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Kampala, Dr. Daniel Kyabayinze, Director of Public Health, who represented the Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine, said the Ministry will take charge of fueling and maintaining the ambulances.

Dr. Kyabayinze noted that the 2021 National Emergency Medical Services Policy requires Type B ambulances, which come with standard life-saving equipment and qualified responders. “Ambulance coverage in Uganda has increased from 2% in 2021 to 54% today,” he revealed, adding that a national call center will soon be operational under code 912 to ease access to ambulance services.

Two type B ambulances were handed over to Dr. Isaac Ddumba, the Mukono Distirct Health Officer at Ministry of health in Kampala on 31st Oct. 2025

Mukono Resident District Commissioner Hajjat Fatuma Ndisaba welcomed the donation, saying road crashes are among the major causes of death in the district due to its growing population and heavy traffic flow. Mukono District is one of the most populated district with 929,224 people  according to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census making demand for ambulance services for the communities within the district
At Mukono General Hospital, where an average of 930 babies are delivered monthly, officials say the ambulances will also support maternal and child health emergences
