Byamukama Alozious has been recognised as the 2025 Health Journalist of the Year by the Ministry of Health, a milestone highlighting his sustained commitment to reporting on mental health, reproductive health, refugee rights, and public health accountability across Uganda. The award was presented during the African Health Summit, held on 14 November 2025 at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, where honours were given to outstanding individuals, institutions, and innovators from various disciplines promoting health and wellbeing in the country.

Alozious works with Mama FM, a leading community media house where human rights, community engagement, and programmes concerning women, youth, health, and gender equality take centre stage. His reporting is deeply embedded in community realities, ensuring that the voices of vulnerable populations, including women, youth, and refugees, are amplified and heard.

Among the factors contributing to his success is his innovative use of social media platforms, including Platform X (formerly Twitter), to engage audiences, promote public health dialogue, and influence policy decisions. By amplifying stories online, he has sparked national conversations, held authorities accountable, and mobilised communities to take informed action on critical health and social issues.

For years, Alozious has produced investigative and evidence-based stories that expose service delivery gaps, highlight social injustices, and hold institutions accountable. His reporting has reached audiences in rural and urban communities, inspiring public debate, informing policy discussions, and promoting behavioural change on key health issues.

Alozious’ work stands out for its “clarity, empathy, and courage,” and his ability to translate complex health challenges into human-centred narratives grounded in evidence. His coverage of adolescent mental health, maternal care inequalities, refugee rights, and gender-based disparities has been widely cited by civil society organisations and used to inform advocacy campaigns.

Speaking after receiving the award, Alozious said the recognition strengthens his resolve to continue reporting stories that protect the dignity and rights of marginalised populations. “This award is not just for me—it belongs to every community member who has trusted me with their experiences,” he said. “Health reporting is a responsibility. When people’s lives are affected by systems that fail, journalists must help bring the truth to light.” Alozious added that receiving recognition will not stop him from asking hard questions to ensure public accountability.

Alozious’ recognition at the African Health Summit at Kololo Independence Grounds, alongside other outstanding professionals, institutions, and health innovators, marks an important milestone in Uganda’s growing health journalism landscape.

Other award categories included Nutritionist of the Year, Nurse of the Year, Lifetime Health Provider of the Year, and Innovative Institution of the Year, among others. Alozious was nominated alongside Walter Mwesigye (NTV) and Raziah Athman (New Vision).
