The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council has launched a nationwide registration exercise for vocational and technical institutions in a bid to address concerns over graduates lacking job-ready skills.
The initiative comes amid growing complaints from employers that many graduates from technical institutions do not possess the practical competencies required in the labour market. By registering institutions, the Council aims to standardise training and ensure learners are equipped with relevant, hands-on skills across various employment sectors.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting held in Kampala, the Chairperson of the TVET Council, Moses Kasakya, said the move is intended to align training programmes with the actual needs of the job market.
Kasakya noted that there has been a persistent mismatch between the skills demanded by employers and those acquired by students upon graduation, a challenge that has contributed to unemployment among technical graduates.
The meeting brought together representatives from various institutions to harmonise the implementation of the registration exercise and encourage compliance among training providers.
The TVET Council believes that regulating and registering training institutions will improve the quality of vocational education and enhance the employability of graduates, ultimately contributing to national development.
