The Ministry of Health, together with the National Medical Stores (NMS), has launched a nationwide campaign to distribute mosquito nets aimed at reducing malaria infections across Uganda.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Achieng, revealed that malaria prevalence in the country has increased from 9.2 percent in 2018 to 12.5 percent in 2025, according to recent health research findings.

She attributed the rise to changing weather patterns, which have created favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.

The minister said the government plans to distribute 25.8 million long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets across 130 districts nationwide.

Priority will be given to districts currently affected by high mosquito infestation as part of intensified malaria control efforts.

Achieng noted that the mosquito net distribution campaign is funded at a cost of approximately USD 100 million, underscoring the government’s commitment to fighting malaria, one of Uganda’s leading causes of illness and death.

She urged Ugandans to properly use the mosquito nets and adopt other preventive measures to protect families, especially pregnant women and children, who are most vulnerable to malaria.

The nationwide distribution exercise is expected to significantly reduce malaria cases and improve public health outcomes across the country.
