Health authorities in Uganda have raised concern over the increasing trend of self-medication, warning that misuse of drugs particularly antibiotics is fueling resistance and reducing treatment effectiveness.

Dr. Sarah Taratwebirwe, a pharmacist at the Ministry of Health Uganda, said many Ugandans take medication without proper diagnosis, often treating the wrong illnesses.

She warned that incorrect drug use can cause medicines to lose their effectiveness over time.

Common conditions such as malaria, cough, and flu are frequently self-treated, with antibiotics often misused, worsening antimicrobial resistance.

Health experts are now urging the public to adopt a “test and treat” approach, especially for malaria.

According to Emmanuel Ainebyoona, seeking professional medical care is critical to ensuring proper treatment and preventing drug resistance.

Authorities also warned about counterfeit and substandard medicines on the market, which pose additional health risks.

The National Drug Authority Uganda continues to monitor and regulate medicines to ensure safety.

Meanwhile, Uganda’s pharmaceutical sector is growing, with increased local production of essential medical supplies.

The Uganda Manufacturers Association says the country is making progress through innovation and partnerships.

In a related development, the Ministry of Health will host the Uganda Pharma and Healthcare Expo & Dialogue 2026 from March 26 to 28 at UMA Show Grounds to promote access, quality, and sustainability in healthcare.
