The Ministry of Health has received 48 portable digital X-ray systems fitted with computer-aided detection (CAD) software, donated by the US government through PEPFAR and USAID, to enhance tuberculosis (TB) screening across the country.
These machines will be distributed to 48 districts, enabling healthcare workers to reach remote areas and detect TB more accurately.Uganda is among the 30 countries with a high burden of TB. In 2023, the disease claimed 41,000 lives and resulted in 94,100 cases. Statistics also indicate that at least 30 people die every day due to TB.
The mobile X-ray machines are fitted with solar batteries and chargers, and each is accompanied by a tricycle, facilitating transportation to hard-to-reach areas. The Ministry of Health aims to prioritise TB screening among vulnerable populations. The goal is to conduct regular screenings, particularly in areas where TB prevalence is high.
US Ambassador William Popp officiated the function, commending the Ministry of Health’s efforts in fighting TB and other health challenges, while praising USAID’s significant contributions to these initiatives. “We are combining efforts to put an end to TB by 2030,” said Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, highlighting the government’s commitment to tackling the disease.
