President Yoweri Museveni has been nominated to run for a fifth term after submitting his papers to the Electoral Commission in Lubowa. Accompanied by key NRM figures, including Speaker Anita Among, Prime Minister Robina Nabanja, Minister of Security Jim Muhwezi, former vice president Edward Ssekandi, and former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga among others, Museveni was cleared to contest in the upcoming 2026-31 elections.
Museveni outlined his vision, emphasizing the need to transform Uganda into a world-class economy. “We’ve made progress in growing our economy and improving Ugandans’ lives,” he said. “Our goal is to leverage peace, security, and agriculture for development.”
Acknowledging challenges, Museveni pledged to address corruption and criminality. “We’ll ensure Uganda is safe and prosperous for all,” he said, highlighting peace’s role in attracting investors and creating jobs, with agriculture employing over 3 million Ugandans.
Electoral Commission Chair Justice Simon Byabakama revealed that several candidates are vying for the presidency, with Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu from the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Nathan Nandala Mafabi from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) also expected to be nominated.
