As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flagbearer, has unveiled a bold climate change plan. Mafabi stated that he is well-equipped to tackle the pressing issue of climate change, given his academic background in environmental studies and experience as a member of the Finance Committee on Environment under COP.
Mafabi’s plan emphasises the urgent need for action to mitigate the devastating impact of climate change on Uganda’s environment, agriculture, and public health. “Unless we address climate change, we are going to face disasters in this country,” he warned, highlighting the need for collective action.
He also criticised developed countries for environmental degradation, calling for both accountability and local action alongside international advocacy. “Who is destroying the environment? Is it the developed countries? If so, we must deal with them—whether they pay for it or not. But in the meantime, what are we doing?” Mafabi questioned.

The FDC presidential candidate pledged to prioritise the environment by investing in initiatives to promote a greener Uganda. He argued that investing in the environment benefits health and agriculture, citing the example of trees producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide.
Mafabi will compete against notable candidates, including Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP), among others.
