Bishop Hanington Mutebi, former Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, has called for peaceful elections and respect for human rights in Uganda. During a confirmation service at St John’s Makerere, 47 children were confirmed into the body of Christ under the theme “Christ as a Caring Family” (Matthew 25:31–46).
Bishop Mutebi expressed concern over the increasing cases of torture and arbitrary arrests, particularly targeting those outside the ruling class. He urged the government to respect citizens’ rights, ensure fair treatment, and guarantee that all political candidates can campaign freely.
“A church as a caring family must be felt, have compassion, care for people’s needs, and visit communities,” Bishop Mutebi said.
He encouraged the confirmed children not only to celebrate their confirmation but also to reflect on their faith and resist corruption. “I have learned that UGX 41 trillion is lost every year in Uganda, yet those who steal are comfortable here,” he added, appealing to the confirmands to reject such behaviour.
The bishop emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence and respect for human rights, especially during the election period. He called on all Ugandans to maintain peace, exercise their rights responsibly, and pray for God’s blessings on the nation and its leaders.
Bishop Mutebi also highlighted the need for the church and nation to care for the vulnerable, including prisoners, the sick, and children without access to education. He expressed gratitude to the media for promoting peace and stability and encouraged them to continue their work without fear or intimidation.
