Uganda’s ministry of health has initiated the distribution of 25.8 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across 130 districts, aiming to shield 8.5 million people from malaria the continent’s top killer disease with a focus on vulnerable groups like pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers, and children over five.
The country ranks among those bearing the heaviest malaria burden worldwide, prompting intensified interventions such as awareness drives, indoor spraying, bush clearing, and use of treated nets.
Over the past three years, malaria cases have spiked, accounting for three out of every 10 outpatient visits, according to Dr.Charles Olora, Director General of Health Services. Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng revealed the $100 million USD effort $90 million for procurement to National Medical Stores in Kajjansi, Entebbe, and $10 million for local transport was funded by Uganda’s government, the Global Fund, and the United States.

She urged politicians to support rather than sabotage the initiative amid campaign seasons, emphasizing ownership through awareness in these 130 malaria hotspots (others are undergoing indoor spraying), warning: “Campaigns will end, but malaria still causes people to die.”
