Uganda’s Ministry of Health has launched the distribution of 25.8 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across 130 districts, targeting protection for 8.5 million people against malaria, the continent’s leading killer disease. The campaign prioritises vulnerable groups, including pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, as well as children aged over five.

Uganda remains among the countries with the heaviest malaria burden globally, prompting intensified interventions such as public awareness campaigns, indoor residual spraying, bush clearing, and the widespread use of treated mosquito nets.

Over the past three years, malaria cases have surged, accounting for three in every ten outpatient visits, according to Dr Charles Olara, Director General of Health Services. A recent joint health sector review reported approximately 16 million malaria cases and more than 20,000 related deaths, with children and mothers bearing the greatest burden. The Ministry of Health further notes that at least 16 people die from malaria every day.

Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said the initiative is supported by a USD 100 million investment, with USD 90 million allocated for procurement through the National Medical Stores in Kajjansi, Entebbe, and USD 10 million earmarked for local transportation. The funding is jointly provided by the Government of Uganda, the Global Fund, and the United States.
